Tulum

Tulum is the only Mayan city that was built beside the sea. It is located in what today is known as the State of Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula in southeastern Mexico. Present day Tulum is divided into three areas: the Hotel Zone, the Town and the Archaeological Zone. The first has some of the most beautiful beaches of the Caribbean coast and is distinguished by its simple architecture that reveals a profound respect for the environment. Its rustic cabañas and small hotels are in complete harmony with the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The town of Tulum has one main avenue that concentrates almost all the commercial activity. There are handicraft and convenience stores, a supermarket, small restaurants, and basic services such as a bank, a bus station and a post office. The native language and traditions are preserved in the area known as the Mayan Zone and in the small neighboring towns. Most people there live in typical homes with palapa roofs.
